How to estimate a gravel driveway
A durable driveway is not one uniform pile of stone. It is a drainage and load-bearing system. The existing soil, slope, water movement, climate, and vehicle weight determine the construction. The quantity calculation becomes reliable only after the layer design is clear.
1. Measure the finished footprint
Measure the full length and average width in feet or meters. Break flared entrances, parking pads, and turnarounds into rectangles or circles, then calculate each part and add the totals.
2. Define each material layer
Calculate the compacted base, intermediate course, and surface course separately. This prevents a dense road-base value from being applied to a lighter decorative stone. It also produces cleaner supplier quotes.
3. Use compacted depth
Enter the depth you need after compaction. Loose material settles as it is rolled and driven on. Your supplier or installer can advise how much loose lift is needed to achieve the designed compacted layer.
4. Add a realistic allowance
Ten percent is a useful planning allowance for a regular area. Ruts, soft spots, grade correction, and irregular shoulders can require more. Do not use extra material as a substitute for proper subgrade preparation.
Example: a 40 ft by 12 ft driveway with one 4-inch layer has 160 cubic feet, or about 5.93 cubic yards, before extra material. A 10% allowance brings the planning order to about 6.52 cubic yards.
