Better measurements
Choose depth before using the calculator
Measure the existing grade
Check several locations rather than assuming the whole area is level. Averages can hide deep ruts or low spots that consume substantial material.
Separate base and finish courses
Enter the compacted thickness of each material independently. A 4-inch base plus a 2-inch surface is two calculations, not one 6-inch layer with one density.
Use compacted thickness
The geometric formula describes finished volume. Delivered loose volume may need to be higher. Confirm the expected compaction factor with the product supplier or installer.
Check particle size
A layer must be thick enough for its largest particles and the intended compaction method. Follow the aggregate and project specification.
