Material calculator

Crushed stone calculator

Estimate crushed stone and compactable aggregate in cubic yards, tons, cubic meters, and tonnes. Adjust density for the exact quarry product on your quote.

Estimate crushed stone

The default uses a 4-inch layer, crushed stone density, and 10% extra material.

Angular aggregate

Estimate the right crushed stone product

Crushed stone is manufactured by breaking rock into specified sizes. Angular faces help particles interlock, while the amount of fine material determines how tightly a product compacts and how freely it drains.

Use the supplier product name

Labels such as #57 stone, 3/4-inch clean stone, crusher run, road base, and dense-graded aggregate are not interchangeable. Names and specifications can differ by region. Match the calculator density to the actual quote.

Calculate separate layers

A drainage layer of clean stone behaves differently from a compacted base that contains fines. Calculate each product at its own finished depth and density. This also makes the order easier for the quarry or landscape yard to verify.

Do not hide drainage problems with extra stone

More material does not correct every soft subgrade, missing outlet, or poor slope. For structural, steep, or water-sensitive projects, confirm the section with a qualified local professional.

Crushed stone weight = volume × product bulk density

Example: a 15 ft by 8 ft base at 4 inches deep contains 40 cubic feet, or 1.48 cubic yards. With 10% extra, the order volume is about 1.63 cubic yards.

Common uses

Calculate by layer and purpose

Base

Compacted support

Select the specified dense-graded product and enter the designed compacted depth.

Drainage

Open-graded stone

Use the quoted density for clean aggregate around drains, foundations, or permeable systems.

Surface

Driveway or path course

Calculate the finish course separately from its base to avoid mixing products and prices.

Quick answers

Crushed stone questions

Is crushed stone the same as gravel?

The names often overlap in everyday use, but crushed stone is mechanically broken and angular. Natural gravel is typically more rounded. Product names and size specifications vary by region and supplier.

How much does a cubic yard of crushed stone weigh?

A planning value near 1.35 short tons per cubic yard is useful for early estimates. Actual bulk density changes with stone type, gradation, moisture, and compaction.

What is the difference between clean stone and crusher run?

Clean stone has fewer fine particles and leaves more open voids for drainage. Crusher run or dense-graded base includes fines that help the layer compact. Confirm the local product specification before ordering.

Should I calculate compacted or loose depth?

Use the designed compacted depth for the geometric estimate. Then ask the supplier or installer how much loose material is required to achieve it after compaction.
